MELANIE SCHIFF
Melanie Schiff was born in Chicago, IL, in 1977 and received her BFA from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, in 1999. She went on to receive her MFA from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Schiff has held seventeen solo exhibitions at venues including Night Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2018); PATRON, Chicago, IL (2018); Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY (2016, 2014); LAXART, Los Angeles, CA (2015); Taka Ishii Gallery Modern, Tokyo, JP (2014); Kavi Gupta, Chicago, IL (2004, 2006, 2009, 2012); Kavi Gupta, Berlin, DE (2010); Horton & Co., New York, NY (2009); Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA (2009); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2007). In 2012 the University Galleries of Illinois State University organized a solo exhibition of her work, titled the stars are not wanted now, which travelled to CAM Raleigh, NC in 2013. A print catalogue, published by University Galleries of Illinois State University, accompanied the exhibition.
Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, at institutions and galleries including Woodstock Center for Photography, Woodstock, NY; Team Gallery, New York, NY; Higher Pictures, New York, NY; The Pit, Los Angeles, CA; MoMA PS1, Long Island City, NY; Night Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo, JP; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; Marian Goodman Gallery, Paris, FR; Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe, DE; Foxy Production, New York, NY; Seattle Museum of Art, Seattle, WA; and Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York, NY. Schiff participated in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.
Her work has been reviewed in publications such as Artforum, Art in America, The New York Times, Modern Painters, Art:21, Art Review, Collector Daily, artcritical, Art in America, Art Forum, Flash Art International, Chicago Sun-Times, and The Boston Globe, among others.
Schiff has been an Artist in Residence at The Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX (2010) and Ox-Bow, Saugatuck, MI (2006), and was the 2006 Artadia Award Grant Recipient. Her work is included in permanent collections at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; and SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna, AT.
